A lotttt of updating...

Reading Week - I spent alot of time doing work in the beginning of Reading week as I was going home for the weekend.
The week beginning of 03 November i spent preparing for our Critical Studies presentation, as i was doing it in a pair it had to be ten minutes long... this was the most nerveracking part of the course yet. Standing in front of people and talking about fashion philosophy, something im not very clued up about was not fun. Buutt.. it went well - well at least I hope. Got over my little stage fright when i realised everyone else was in the same boat.

Monday November 10th and so on...

Had a great week, did lots of work, and finished making my dress. Tuesdays session had to start the manipulation of the garment... i wasn't completely ready to for this, and put off making the first cut for ages. I spent too much time worrying about 'mucking it up' that i probably in fact wasted valuble making time. Lesson learned. Over the weekend i finished my dress completely.

Monday November 17th - Critical Studies Trip

Went to Leeds City Gallery. And had an interesting talk for about an hour. There were traditional paintings and photographic images portraying the traditional images in a different and controversial way. I prefered the traditional paintings:

Tuesday October 14th - Creative Approaches to Fashion
Fabric Manipulation

In this lesson i had to think about my word i was using, Gathering Up' and portray that in little experiments with fabric. I had a wide range of fabrics and media to play around with but I wasn't in the right mind set for this, I was concentrating on other things, I haven't been sleeping properly so I was very tired. Therefore I decided it would be better to produce them another day.

Wednesday - Private Study

As i have finished the 2 weeks of drawing styles workshop. I have the following four weeks off, however I had coursework set for this day to do at home. I produced an A2 painting of a garment in my wardrobe, i was really happy with the outcome however I am going to produce another as i think the first didn't portray all of the words it said to consider, or use a variety of media so my next step is to produce an A2 drawing using many different styles that I learnt in the workshop.

Thursday - Private Study

Added to my research file for Creative Approaches to Fashion, studying the works of Eva Hesse.

Friday - Pattern Cutting

Really interesting day, enjoyed measuring out the basic sleeve and bodice blocks. Picture of me drawing out the bodice block.

October 6th - October 9th

Re-capping on last Friday. I produced a variety of seams and above are some of the photographs of the seams that I made.
Monday - Critical Studies.
Really struggling with this class - hopefully it will get clearer as the weeks go on.

Tuesday - Creative Approaches to Fashion.
For Tuesdays session I had to photocopy the same image 10 times. I chose the artist I am using for my Creative Approaches to Fashion project (carrying on from the Summer Project), Eva Hesse. (The image is above).

The task assigned in class, was to use the 2D image and manipulate into a 3D image. I struggled at first, because i was too busy trying to make the drawing too perfect and Fashion Illustration based. I got the hang of it, and produced several sketches using the image and mixed media.

After coming home and photographing these drawings. I found a book titled "Fashion Illustration Next" by Laird Borrelli. It had a couple of images in it by Esdar Maren which i think resembles what the tutors were trying to get us to do. The artist, was using images as the structure of the dress.

-Esdar Maren.

Another that I found was "Sewing Strokes" by photgrapher Manuel Lagos Cid.

Wednesday - Creative Approaches to Fashion.

Mark Making, I really enjoyed this day. Again, spent the first few sketches trying to paint a perfect picture, I think I will eventually over time get out of this habit. We had to experiment with using different media's to portray different surface textures. For instance in one of the images you can see I have used masking tape to convey the texture of the woolen garment.

3 Weeks In...

Manchester:

Freshers
Moved in on the 13th September, met my flatmates who are all lovely. Freshers week begins. Went to a few bars/clubs - Tiger Tiger, Oceana, Varsity. Enrolment on Monday, met a few people in my class. Wednesday went to Manchester on a day trip. Took a few photos of buildings, shop windows etc. That Friday I chose my electives for the Reading week in February. I chose millinery as my first choice and Jewellery making as my second.

Following week was Induction week i had CAD, Library and Industrial Machinery Inductions. I had a PPD1 briefing and had a learning styles workshop, apparently I am a more social learner, - even though i prefer to work by myself. Hmmm. Went to the Freshers fair and picked up what seemed like a hundred flyers which are all now carefully placed on my noticeboard in my room.

The week just gone, was our first proper week. Monday September 29th, I had Critical Studies and was set a Critical Studies Image Analysis exercise where I had to compare and contrast a Victorian Dinner dress to Hussein Chalayan's Remote Control dress which was fairly easy. I started as soon as it was given to me as i wanted to try and get it finished so i wouldn't be stressing out about it the night before. I was also set a five minute oral presentation with a 500 word written summary which has to be in on the 3rd November - fun, fun, fun, not really looking forward to speaking in front of the whole class. =

Tuesday September 30th - Creative Approaches to Fashion - I feel like I am going to enjoy this brief. Enjoy doing research so should be fun. Manipulated garment - 2nd part of the brief, i did this on Foundation last year, I know i have to make a good research file for it to work.

Wednesday October 1st - Still life drawing exercise. I enjoyed working with ink and mixing media, i normally stick to using one media, so I'll definitely start using mixed media in some of my experiments for my research file.

CAF/CAD Tutoring - Second part of the day. Hmmm... was interesting but very long.

Thursday October 2nd - Independent Study Day, I haven't been sleeping well so i had a good lie in.

Fruity Friday October 3rd - Creative Design Realisation. Had a good day, enjoyed making the different seams, I finished everything quite quickly, so I was allowed to go early.
